Debates and round tables with guest curators, artists and researchers provide an additional perspective on the programme and are given the opportunity to question artistic practices and their concerns. The event is a unique European platform where artists can meet and exchange ideas with a large audience and launch new projects. More than just a showcase of work, the event offers a true forum in the presence of guests from around the world: leading figures in the fields of cinema, contemporary and digital artists, researchers, institutional supervisors and emerging organisations are brought together to share their experiences and reflections in the context of evolving art and culture. Les Rencontres Internationales was launched in 1997 based on this idea both simple and complex, of which the issues are still essential today: create pathways between different artistic forms and their respective audiences and relating to the moving image ; encourage action where there is none and create relationships between what may seem remotely related. This creates new exchanges and supports new forms. The event has since grown, but the idea remains fundamental and continues to be the project's driving force. The history of Les Rencontres Internationales is marked by the annual presence of numerous artists and filmmakers participating in the event, some of them contributing through carte-blanche programmes, special screenings and workshops. Their exceptional presence is as much the expression of a relationship with the public - in relation to their images and the rigors of their work - as the embodiment of their loyalty over time: Jean Rouch, Jean-Marie Straub et Danièle Huillet, Jean-Luc Godard et Anne-Marie Miéville, Pedro Costa, Chantal Akerman, Alexandre Sokourov, Artavazd Pelechian, Harun Farocki, Werner Schroeter, also Antonio Muntadas, Steina Vasulka, Takahiko Iimura, Wolf Vostell and many others.
